WHO NEEDS A USDOT NUMBER?

A USDOT number is required for any company that owns or operates a Commercial Vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of 10,001 pounds or more, transporting cargo, or a vehicle transporting 9 or more passengers in Interstate (crossing state lines) Commerce. A USDOT number is also required on any intrastate carriers hauling hazardous materials which require a safety permit.

There are states that require USDOT numbers for all commercial motor vehicle registrants. They include:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

SCOPE & CLASSIFICATION

Once you know you are required to register for a USDOT number, knowing what classification and scope of authority your particular type of business operates in and what cargo classifications describe your commodities is critical.

There are two scopes of authority. They are:

    • Interstate (crossing state lines or hauling cargo intended to cross state lines)

    • Intrastate (hauling cargo within a particular state's borders).

The most common classifications for a USDOT carrier are Private, For-hire or Exempt For-Hire.

However, there are other classifications available, such as Private Passengers- (business), Private Passengers- (non-business), Migrant, U.S. Mail, Federal Government, State Government, Local Government, and Indian Tribe. It is possible for a company to be listed with more than one classification. If you have questions about your carrier classification, give us a call at (877) 450-7227

If you are unable to locate the commodities you are hauling from the  Cargo classifications options, you may select 'Other' and enter in your commodities manually. As always, if you have any questions on how to properly enter your application information, call us Monday through Friday at 877-352-1996.

Our expert staff will be happy to go over your USDOT application with you at no charge and ensure that you aren't overlooking any crucial points that could result in fees or out-of-service penalties.
